VolusiaExposed.Com Adds The Volusia County
Medical Examiner's Office To Our Brady List

VOLUSIA SHOULD RELINQUISH "HOME RULE" CONTROL OF THE M.E.'s OFFICE

Updated

"History will be kind to me for I intend to write it."
Winston Churchill

According to a recent Daytona Beach News Journal article - Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood called the medical examiner's office "one of the most important pieces to the justice system". VolusiaExposed.Com agrees with Sheriff Chitwood's assessment.

According to a recent letter sent by Volusia County's Medical Examiner Sara Zydowicz to the Florida Medical Examiners Commission - Dr. Zydowicz's assessment of the Volusia County M.E.'s office has brought into question the overall veracity of that office.

Dr. Zydowicz's letter memorializes several deficiencies within the M.E.'s office, including, the severe lack of staffing, and the lack of action by the previous Chief Medical Examiner.

Dr. Zydowicz's narrative seems to indicate that these deficiencies have negatively influenced homicide investigations ("..is the fact that many of these homicide cases do not have internal pictures").

As is detailed in our May 19, 2018 article VolusiaExposed.Com has been, for years, highlighting deficiencies within the M.E.'s office - and we (VolusiaExposed.Com) AGAIN highly recommend that Volusia County relinquish their "home rule" control of this office to the State of Florida.

Based on Dr. Zydowicz's letter - VolusiaExposed.Com now possess the necessary evidence to add the Volusia County M.E.'s Office, as a whole, to our Brady List.

Our Brady List exposes local police officers, whereas, their professional credibility has come under question as possible exculpatory evidence within criminal prosecutions. We (VolusiaExposed.Com), now submit that the current scandal and deficiencies attached to the M.E.'s Office has introduced such possible exculpatory evidence into our local criminal justice system.

Deputy County Manager's George Recktenwald's May 21, 2018 letter to the Volusia County Council did not persuade us from assigning the M.E.'s Office to our Brady List. Why? - well because we found his letter to be self serving. Prior to Mr. Recktenwald's promotion to Deputy County Manager - he was the Director of the Volusia County Department of Public Protection - the M.E.'s Office is a division of that department.

According to the third paragraph of Mr. Recktenwald's letter - Volusia County advised Seminole County within a May 14, 2018 letter, that effective October 1, 2018 - Volusia County would no longer be providing M.E. services to Seminole County. With less than a six (6) month notice - Volusia County intends to leave Seminole County in the lurch for M.E. services. Wonder what kind of impact that will have on homicide investigations within Seminole County?

In our (VolusiaExposed.Com) OPINION - the State of Florida should step in - and combine Volusia and Seminole into ONE state district M.E. office - outside the authority of local Volusia County government. Doing so would allow the dead to rest easier, the living victims of homicide would be better served - and law enforcement officials would secure the evidence they need to keep our community safe in a more organized and efficient manner.

Stand by to stand by - there is surely more to come of this......
