In A Cell For 7 Hours? Did County Spokesman Give Contradictory Accounts?
Given the DBNJ article to the right of this page, we here at VolusiaExposed.Com wondered whether Inmate Wilkerson had actually been held naked in her cell for seven hours, and whether County Spokesman, Dave Byron had provided the Daytona Beach News Journal with contradictive statements. -->
In our search for the truth, we made a public record request for all emails sent or received by Mr. Byron, regarding Inmate Wilkerson, from March 10th to March 20th, 2014. In fairness to Mr. Byron, he immediately provided us with the requested email thread. Based on our review, and Bryon's explanation (see below comments) - it is possible that Bryon simply made an unintentional mistake. "Obviously, the information given to the News-Journal in response to the newspaper's first contact with me was not accurate, based on information I was given by the jail. This was a mistake, certainly not intentional. I have never knowingly provided false information to the news media or anyone else." ~ Dave Byron In the past, Byron has informed VolusiaExposed.Com that he has a reputation within the local news media community of being a "straight shooter" regarding releasing information to media outlets. While we don't suspect that Mr. Byron's veracity can be challenged based on this one incident - we do suspect that this incident has called into question his ability to "shoot straight". Be careful Dave, your aim is a little shaky, don't shoot yourself in the foot. If information were bullets, Volusia County only appears willing to give Byron one bullet at a time - in similar fashion, as Sheriff Andy Taylor did with Deputy Barney Fife. |

What is a little harder to explain, is why Mr. Byron did not just repeat (or suppply) the jail's policy regarding the housing of suicidal inmates. Apparently, per policy, mental health / medical staff determine whether a inmate is left naked in a cell.(see page 4 - item # 6 of attached policy)
Lastly, the question of whether the Volusia County jail keeps inmates naked in cells is NOT a new topic of discussion. We find it difficult to believe that Byron was not aware of this past history. We invite you to read the attached April 2007 DBNJ article. --> And there you have it....the rest of the story...we suspect that Paul Harvey would be proud...stand by to stand by ....over and out for now. |
