Sheriff's Office Volusia Jail Inmate Defrauds Jail With Counterfeit Check Counterfeit Check Was From The Jail's Inmate Fund Account - With "Volusia" Misspelled |
September 27, 2018 |
According to a recent Volusia County Sheriff's Office investigative report - Volusia County Branch Jail Inmate Ryan Athey ripped off the jail's commissary store for over $350.00. Adding insult to injury - Inmate Athey accomplished his fraud by re-depositing a counterfeit check from the jail's very own inmate fund account. Jail inmates are provided with checks for any funds they have remaining in their accounts upon their release. The proverbial slap in the face came when jail officials realized that the counterfeit check had "Volusia" misspelled (County of Voulisa). By the time jail officials realized that they had been hoodwinked - Inmate Athey had already consumed his commissary purchases. Sadly, the jail's commissary was not the only victim of this counterfeit check scheme. Down the street from the jail is a convenience store that many released inmates gravitate to. It is known to many inmates, that this store has a history of cashing these inmate fund checks. According to another earlier filed VCSO report - this convenience store was also a victim of these counterfeit checks. This publication must ask - what is going on at the Volusia County Branch Jail? Staff can't even recognize that their very own checks are being counterfeited - and then re-deposited? The cherry on top of all of this - maybe the recent criminal charging of a Volusia County corrections officer for retail theft. Soft information has it - that Ofc. Jennifer Raulerson was heavily involved in the jail's internal affairs office. ...."and there you have it....stand by to stand by ... there is surely more to come of this"... Sgt.
